Helping Kids Be Large and In Charge of Their Behavior

"Large and In Charge"

A friend of mine from twitter, who just so happens to be a Kindergarten teacher, had tweeted me the other day, asking if I had any idea about kids doing self-talk to be in charge of their learning and behavior.  "Why, yes, I do!" was my instant reply.  Self-control is an issue for many of the kids and teens with whom I work.

I told her that I frequently deal with self-talk (as reflected in our "Cool Down Strategies for Kids", "Anger Ice-Cream Cones", "Dealing with Sadness" and "Dealing with Disappointment") and have long used a term with students about them being "Large and In Charge".  I use this term so routinely (with young and older students...even teens) that I have it scrawled on an old blackboard in my office.  My friend asked if I would snap a shot of it.  Here ya go:

This has been on my old blackboard in my office for months!
I have those huge blackboards that stretch the full span of two
walls. Fun! It invites lots of impromptu art work from
young and old alike!

Nothing Special

It's nothing special, but it gets the job done.  I point at that chalkboard often whether I am working with an elementary student or a high school student.  They all seem to get it.  We can be "Large and In Charge" of everything in our life.  This is true, because we can control our thinking.  When we change our thoughts, we change our lives.  It's pretty simple, really.  Simple and tough all at the same time.

The "Large and In Charge" mantra works! Youngster to oldster, there is something for everyone.  I've pulled together a handy lesson in this concept for use with kids in Pre-K through 5th.  This lesson can take as little as 15 minutes to drive home a crucial concept, one that can become a mainstay in your classroom management, part of your family mission, or a tool in your therapeutic or counseling toolbox. It may be used in childcare settings, scouting and more.  The more self-control we all have, the better.
